Information for Amoeba Users ---------------------------- Contents -------- 1) Amoeba version required for XFree86 2) Installing the Binaries and Libraries 3) Cross compiling Xfree86 for Amoeba 1 - Amoeba version required for XFree86 --------------------------------------- The necessary support for Xfree86 is available in Amoeba 5.1 "i80386/ibm_at" workstation kernels. Amoeba 5.0 kernels have a different iop-server interface, so they will not work. It is possible to add a TCP/IP server to a workstation (or other) kernel, but not required. Under native Amoeba the standard transaction primitives are used for X11. You only need a TCP/IP server if you also want to run Unix clients on your Amoeba X server. 2 - Installing the Binaries and Libraries ----------------------------------------- Under Amoeba, the X binaries should be installed in /super/module/x11/bin. Note that users will start the binaries from /public/module/x11/bin, which is a link to /super/module/x11/bin without write privileges. The libraries (application defaults, fonts, bitmaps and the Xconfig file) should be installed in directory /super/module/x11/lib. If the cross compilation facility described below is used, the cross-installation from Unix to Amoeba can be done by means of a simple "make install" in the top of the X11R5 configuration tree. The Amoeba boot server can be instructed to start an X server and a "xlogin" session on the workstation, but is wise first to test the X server and an xterm client by starting them manually. Example boot server entries telling how to start the X server are included in the Amoeba 5.1 distribution. 3 - Cross compiling Xfree86 for Amoeba 5.1 ------------------------------------------ It is possible to cross compile Xfree86 for Amoeba 5.1, using either - ACK (the Amsterdam Compiler Kit) and support utils or - GCC-2.3.3 together with GNU "ld" and "ar" from binutils-2.0. This may be useful if you maintain the Xfree sources on another (Unix) system, with more free disk resources. To do this, proceed as follows: - Create a parallel, symbolically linked "shadow" X configuration tree, containing links to the X source tree (with Xfree patches installed) Let's say your top level Amoeba config tree is $AMOEBACONF. Then this tree will reside in "$AMOEBACONF/i80386./X11R5/mit", where is either "ack" or "gcc-2". - Create a file "$AMOEBACONF/i80386.gnu-2/X11R5/mit/config/platform.def" containing the following defines required for the cross compilation (replacing the $variables with the appropriate values, of course): ----------- #define AmoebaTop $AMOEBA_TOP #define AmoebaBin $(ATOP)/bin.sun4 #define AmoebaConf $AMOEBA_CONF #define MacroFile ack_ux_i386.cf /* or gnu_am_i386.cf */ #define MacroIncludeFile /* or */ ----------- - Directory "$AMOEBACONF/i80386./toolset" should already contain the shell scripts "do_gcc", "do_ld" and "do_ar", which are included in the Amoeba 5.1 distribution. They will be used to call the ACK or GNU i80386 cross compiler, loader and archiver respectively. - Start the X build in the X11R5/mit config tree with the following command: make World BOOTSTRAPCFLAGS='-DCROSS_COMPILE' >BuildX.i80386 2>&1 & - When this has finished successfully, the client and server binaries, scripts, and other support files can be installed from Unix to Amoeba by means of the command "make install" in the X11R5/mit config tree. $XFree86: mit/server/ddx/x386/README.Amoeba,v 2.1 1994/03/08 08:07:05 dawes Exp $
